What is Expected of Volunteers
Volunteers play a valuable part in community life today, so it is very important you uphold the high standards of volunteering.
Commitment - It is important that you do what you have agreed to. If, in an emergency, you are unable to fulfil your commitment, let the person you are responsible to know as soon as possible. Offer only as much time as you can comfortably give. Do not over commit yourself as it is usually easier to increase your hours of work, rather than cut back.
Punctuality and reliability - Remember that other people depend on your help.
Confidentiality - Sometimes in the course of your voluntary work you will learn things about which have to to remain in confidence. If you are concerned, contact the Volunteer Centre.
Finally, we advise you not to promise material assistance or services to the person you are helping before discussing it with the organisation or the Volunteer Centre.
Client Volunteer relationship
This applies where you are working with a client on a one to one basis without supervision.
Avoid giving your address address and telephone number to clients. If the person you are helping wishes to contact you, they can do so through the organisation you volunteer for. This is for your protection and privacy.
Be cautious about receiving gifts from clients. refusal may be hurtful, but acceptance may put you under obligation.
